Sometimes people come to therapy to solve a specific problem, like procrastinating on a project, or trouble with sleeping. Sometimes the problem is solved and therapy ends. What often happens though, is that the problem you are having is actually a sign of something going on at a deeper level--otherwise you would have solved the problem yourself! I think of these problems as messengers from the places inside of us that can’t speak because they are ancient and hidden from us.
No matter how you see the problem you are having, you are looking for help because even though you may know what to do, you can’t do it. Therapy can help with figuring out what is getting in the way. Once we do that, we can figure out how to work with the problem, and sustain the effort it takes to make the changes you want.
I see the therapy relationship as a living organism that evolves over time through being lived and challenged and fed and supported. Each of these evolving relationships is unique and cannot be predicted. So, while one person may be happy to be able to finish that project or get eight hours sleep, another is more curious now, about who they are. Sometimes that person will continue their exploration--deeper into the mystery of their own being. I believe that this journey is one of the most deeply satisfying of all life experiences. That is why I do this work. I see my part in this process as a partner and a guide. It is my ability to be present with you, to be a secure base for you, to see you without judgement and hear you deeply that is most important in my work.
As do most therapists, I work with a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, addiction, life transitions, problems in school or at work, problems in relationships, grief, and issues of identity. Some of the modalities I use are EMDR, Sandtray, Guided Visualization, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing for substance abuse, Grief Counseling and Therapy, and Emotion Focused Therapy.
