This page is designed to share some information about my therapy practice and policies. I received my MA in Counseling Psychology at the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I work with couples, individual adults, and children.
Regarding confidentiality: It is my duty as a therapist to maintain absolute confidentiality about our sessions unless: (1) you authorize the release of information; (2) I am rightfully ordered by a court to release information; (3) you present a physical danger to yourself or others; (4) child or elder abuse is suspected (in the latter two cases, I am required by law to inform potential victims and/or legal authorities so that protective measures can be taken). Confidentiality in the case of conjoint therapy is limited by the special circumstances of that modality, which will be discussed on a case by case basis.
Regarding time and cancellations: The therapy “hour” typically lasts for 50 minutes once a week for individuals, and 60 to 75 minutes for couples, unless we make other arrangements. Your appointment is reserved exclusively for you each week. If for any reason, I have to reschedule with you, I will do my best to find another appointment time for the same week. I ask the same of you should you need to reschedule. I ask that you give me as much notice as possible if you do have to cancel, allowing me to fill the time. If you cancel fewer than 24 hours before an appointment, you will be charged for that time. For example, if you cancel a 7:00PM appointment, you need to call no later than 7:00PM the previous day in order to avoid being charged for the session.
Regarding fees and payment: I expect payment at the time of your session with cash or check. Please make checks out to “Lindy Hewitt MFT.” To make the best use of the therapy hour, I suggest you write your check before your session begins. In addition to my usual fee, I do reserve some of my practice for lower fee clients. If during the course of therapy, your financial situation changes, a fee adjustment may be considered. I typically raise my fees once a year, and you can expect that I will discuss the increase with you well in advance. Please let me know if you want insurance reimbursement, and I will give you a statement at the end of each month which you can then send in with your insurance form.
When I am unavailable: During vacations or other extended absences, I will provide you with the phone number of another therapist to be available to you in case of emergency. This number will also be on my voice mail message during my absence. I will also encourage you to reach out to friends and family, and to call the Crisis Line for help.
